Georgia Tech Theme Park and Engineering Design Club Spring 2024 In-House Design Competition

Challenge: Creating an immersive experience that feels fresh with each ride, ensuring guests remain engaged and do not get bored.

Solution: Designed multiple ride paths that allow guests to encounter different Greek monsters in varying sequences, providing a unique experience each time and keeping the adventure exciting and unpredictable.

Process:

  • Concept Development: Created an immersive ride experience based on Greek mythology, crafting a compelling storyline and world-building elements.

  • Ride Layout & Queue Design: Designed the ride layout, including room configurations and path flow, ensuring the queue experience clearly conveyed the story to all guests, regardless of their familiarity with Greek myths.

  • Ride Vehicle Development: Researched and discussed potential ride vehicles, finalizing a general design to fit the story and ride mechanics.

  • Audio & Scriptwriting: Developed a detailed ride-through script, incorporating immersive audio narration to enhance the guest experience.

  • CAD Design & Prototyping: Modeled the ride vehicle in CAD, ensuring accuracy and feasibility in the design.

  • Fabrication & Detailing: 3D printed and hand-painted the CAD model to create a highly detailed prototype, bringing the ride vehicle concept to life.

Concept Development

Story:

Daedalus, the legendary inventor and architect, was tasked by the King of Crete to design an inescapable prison for Greece’s most dangerous and malevolent monsters. To accomplish this, he created a labyrinth so intricate, confusing, and dark that no creature could ever find its way out.

At the heart of the maze lies a powerful energy core—an ancient force that keeps the monsters trapped within its endless corridors. But now, the core is weakening, and the labyrinth’s defenses are failing. Daedalus calls upon you to embark on a daring mission: navigate the treacherous maze, face its terrifying inhabitants, and restore the power core before the monsters break free.

Do you have what it takes to survive the Labyrinth and save the world from chaos?

Ride System:

The journey begins in Daedalus’s workshop, where guests will experience a short pre-show. Here, Daedalus warns of the maze’s perils and explains his ingenious solution to restoring the Labyrinth’s dwindling power. Once briefed, guests will be guided by Daedalus’s son, Icarus, to the loading dock, where their adventure truly begins.

Guests will board a chariot-style ride vehicle, an invention of Daedalus himself, powered by his mechanical horses. Each chariot features two rows, accommodating 4–6 riders per vehicle (2–3 guests per row). To enhance visibility, the back row is slightly elevated, ensuring all riders have a clear view of the immersive show scenes.

The ride vehicle is designed to fully immerse guests in the experience, making them feel as if they are truly navigating the labyrinthine depths of Daedalus’s creation. Its motion system draws inspiration from Alien Swirling Saucers and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, offering a dynamic and thrilling ride experience.
